SCREEN How to Delete a Wallpaper on iPhone
To delete a wallpaper on iPhone, unlock the phone, press and hold the Lock Screen to open the wallpaper switcher, swipe to the wallpaper you want gone, swipe up on it, and tap the red trash icon, then confirm Delete This Wallpaper. That removes the Lock Screen and its paired Home Screen together. The photo stays in your library, and if the wallpaper was linked to a Focus, the Focus keeps working without it.
How to delete a wallpaper on iPhone, step by step
Every wallpaper you have ever added is still saved in the switcher until you remove it. The steps below work the same way on recent iOS versions, including iOS 26 and iOS 27.
- Unlock, but stay on the Lock Screen. Use Face ID or Touch ID without swiping up. The switcher will not open from a locked phone.
- Press and hold the wallpaper. The Lock Screen shrinks and your saved wallpapers line up side by side.
- Swipe to the wallpaper you want to remove. Swipe left or right until it is centred. Check the small Focus badge beneath it if you have Focus links set up.
- Swipe up on that wallpaper. A red trash icon slides in underneath it.
- Tap the trash icon and confirm. Choose Delete This Wallpaper. It disappears from the switcher immediately.
- Check what is active. If you deleted the wallpaper you were using, iOS moves to the one beside it. Tap any other wallpaper to make it current, or tap + to add a fresh one.
If you only want to remove the wallpaper from the Home Screen and keep the Lock Screen, do not delete anything. Press and hold the Lock Screen, tap Customize, choose Home Screen, and switch the background to a color or gradient. The split-screen guide covers every Home Screen option.
What deleting a wallpaper removes, and what it keeps
Deleting is safer than most people expect. It removes a saved layout, not your photos.

Why won't the iPhone let you delete a wallpaper?
Almost always because it is the only wallpaper on the phone. iOS needs at least one Lock Screen, so the trash icon does not appear until you have something to fall back on. Add a second wallpaper first, then swipe up on the old one and delete it. The other common cause is swiping in the wrong place: the delete control lives in the Lock Screen switcher, which you reach by pressing and holding an unlocked Lock Screen.
Two smaller catches. The switcher only opens after Face ID or Touch ID has unlocked the phone, so a locked screen just shows the flashlight and camera. And if you have Screen Time restrictions that lock wallpaper changes, the whole editor is greyed out; the restriction has to be lifted in Settings first. On recent iOS versions there is no other lock on deletion.
Does deleting a wallpaper delete the photo from your iPhone?
No. A wallpaper is a separate copy that iOS makes when you set it. Deleting the wallpaper removes that copy and its clock and widget layout, but the photo you chose stays in your library exactly where it was. The reverse is also true: deleting the picture from Photos does not remove a wallpaper you already set from it, because the phone is no longer reading the original.
This matters for downloaded designs too. A wallpaper saved from ScreenLux lands in Photos as a 1080 × 2400 image; deleting the Lock Screen leaves that file in your library, and deleting the file leaves the Lock Screen. What happens to a Focus linked to a deleted wallpaper?
The Focus survives and keeps working. Only the link is removed, so turning that Focus on no longer swaps in a particular Lock Screen; the phone simply stays on whatever wallpaper is current. If you want the automatic switch back, open the switcher, press and hold a different wallpaper, tap the Focus button beneath it, and pick the Focus. Nothing about the Focus schedule or its allowed notifications changes.
If a wallpaper seems to reappear after you delete it, check whether a Focus is linked to a look-alike. People often save the same image twice, once with a link and once without, and delete the wrong copy. The small Focus badge under each wallpaper in the switcher tells you which is which.
How do you reset the iPhone wallpaper to the default?
There is no reset button, but Apple keeps its own designs available. Press and hold the Lock Screen, tap +, and scroll to the featured collections, which include the current default wallpapers for your iOS version. Add one, choose Set as Wallpaper Pair, and then delete the wallpapers you no longer want. The result is the same as a fresh phone: an Apple design on both screens and nothing else in the switcher.
A default look does not have to be Apple's. If you want a clean, readable Home Screen with something more personal on the Lock Screen, a dark image with the subject low in the frame is the safe choice. Can you delete several wallpapers at once?
No. iOS deletes wallpapers one at a time from the Lock Screen switcher. There is no select mode and no bulk delete in Settings. The fastest method is to stay in the switcher: swipe up, tap the trash icon, confirm, and the switcher stays open so you can move straight to the next one. Clearing a dozen old wallpapers takes about a minute.
The switcher does not slow down with many saved wallpapers, so there is no performance reason to prune. Delete for tidiness, or so a Focus link is easy to find. Keep at least one Lock Screen that leaves the top of the frame empty; the Lock Screen picks are composed that way.
